Sacrifice

There are many things in life for which we make sacrifices. Sports require us to give up our time, our energy, and sometimes our favorite foods in order that we can work out and get fit. Learning a musical instrument or even a foreign language can require hours of practice to perfect our skill.
As we age, our priorities change and as do some of our reasons for sacrifice. Our family becomes a top priority in our lives and we sacrifice many things that once made us happy in order for our family to thrive and function in a way God wants it to. Of course, many people do not make those sacrifices, and in return, families become volatile and relationships seem distant. Sacrifice is needed in order to achieve something greater, something deeper.
Sacrifice is a dominant theme throughout the Bible, especially the Old Testament. The Israelite people, through their sacrificial system, acknowledged their sin and responded to it. Of course, those were not enough to bring them back into a right relationship with God. One more sacrifice had to be made in order for sin to be totally defeated.
I cannot fathom what it is Jesus Christ sacrificed for me. Sure, I know the words and the story, but wrapping my head around the meanings and the pain is hard to do. Jesus gave up heaven, lived a tough life, and then gave up that life for me and for you. What have we given up for Him lately?
