One of my favorite movie quotes comes from Ridley Scott’s Roman epic Gladiator. Early in the movie, as Maximus rallies his troops, he says,“What we do in life, echos in eternity!” How true that statement is. Eternity might be something that is hard to grasp for most, much like the aspect of an eternal God, knowing no time constraints. Never-the-less, eternity is what faces us everyday. Each day we take one more step in the long line of our souls eternal existence. Though our bodies might not last, our souls will remain.
One thing we do not have to fear in this eternal journey is death. For the true Christian, death is merely a transition into something greater, something deeper. The Hebrew writer tells us (2:14-15) that we should no longer be a slave to the fear of death because of Jesus’ sharing in our humanity and His death on the cross.
Do not let the fear of death or any other thing control your life. What kind of echos will you hear in your eternity? Echos of being afraid to step up and step out for our Lord? Echos of never fully trusting God and, in turn, fearing death? Or, will it be the echos of the saints singing beautiful praise to our Father in Heaven? You decide.
